CRAIG
CONNOR

Moving Mountains documents the ongoing problem of landslides in Rhondda Cynon Taf county borough of the south Wales valleys. This problem has recently resurfaced due to the turbulent weather conditions posed by Storm Dennis in early 2020. Heavy precipitation, which has become more frequent as a result of climate change, can lead to an aggravation of coal tips, resulting in large masses of waste from the coal mining industry being displaced into the valleys, much to the alarm of residents. However, the local authorities have realised the scale of the problem and are beginning to make arrangements to mitigate the impact of these landslides.

Moving Mountains depicts the damage caused by these landslides, as well as the preventative measures that are currently under construction. The photographs spotlight the reasons for the local resident’s concern, by illustrating the close proximity of these coal slips to housing, infrastructure and amenities. Many people in the area recall the tragedy of the ‘Aberfan’ disaster (1966), when 116 children and 28 adults were killed, and are concerned that there is a potential for an incident of this nature to occur again.
